Mia Priest from Nightmare A.D Speaks To Metal Saves
As part of our ever-expanding quest to cover all things metal for all areas and sub-genres, Metal Saves has been combing the Earth looking for the best metal in those unexpected locations, the focus of this interview, the first in a new feature, is Mia Preist from Cambodia's Nightmare A.D, a band made up on international members operating out of a recovering and hopeful country.
MS - Your band has members from different backgrounds including the US and New Zealand, how did you all come together as a band?
Mia - We all live and work here in Cambodia despite being from different countries. I formed the band with another member (Kandhi - guitars) from Singapore who was based here and recommended Todd (drums - New Zealand) and Gem (bass - Philippines) to join the band as they were interested in playing punk covers, we started off as a Misfits cover band. We started doing original music and I was writing a lot of thrash-based stuff and we became more of a thrash metal/crossover band. The line-up has changed over the years, now that Kandhi and Gem are gone. We now have Genesis (bass – Philippines), Jon (keys – US) and Ollie (guitars – Canada) in the line-up along with Todd and myself.
MS -What is the metal scene like in Cambodia, is it hard to book shows or is there a strong following?
Mia - Well it is generally hard to find a Metal audience here in Cambodia but there is a small scene of about 100 or so individuals. Our old bassist Ned was doing shows for a while then I started doing shows under the moniker GET IN THE PENH, which I have as of this year handed over to Tin of the band REIGN IN SLUMBER. It isn’t hard to book shows but it is all very DIY. However, we do have the support of a few venues such as OSCAR’S ON THE CORNER and CLOUD.

MS - Cambodia has a well documented and unfortunate, troubled past. Has this influenced your music at all or do you wish to avoid it?
Mia - In our first EP/MCD “Corruptors”, we do highlight some of these issues such as poverty, the effects of corruption and the advocation of change. In our second EP/MCD “Phantoms of Our Ruin” has moved away from that a bit and is more about the empowerment of the self and the venting of personal antagonisms.

MS - A common question but what bands influenced you?
Mia - Thrash Metal bands such as SODOM, KREATOR, DESTRUCTION, SLAYER, METALLICA, SEPULTURA, VOIVOD, CORONER, etc as well as Crust Punk bands such as DISFEAR, SKITSYSTEM, WOLFPACK/WOLFBRIGADE, DISCHARGE, HIS HERO IS GONE, DOOM, FROM ASHES RISE, etc.
MS - So If you could tour with any artist who would you want to share a stage with?
Mia - Our friends in REIGN IN SLUMBER and DOCH CHKAE
MS - Are you interested in breaking into the Western metal scene or is this not an objective?
Mia - This is purely out of passion. As long as we break even and have fun doing it, that’s all that matters. I’m the only person in the band who isn’t a parent. We all hold day-jobs. I’ve played in a known band before IMPIETY along with my own band's ABSENCE OF THE SACRED and BLOOD DIVISION and had my fair share of touring around Asia and Europe. It was a great experience but I think I’m happy where I am now.
MS - Finally, what does the future hold for Nightmare A.D?
Mia - Let’s see how it goes!
We'd like to thank Mia for her time and introducing us to her band, check out their releases on their official Bandcamp page and always, watch this space for more exclusive content.
